The formula was popularised by Chartmasters' CSPC methodology. For example, 1,166 Spotify streams equal approximately 1 EAS.

Why does this site show a different number than ChartMasters?

ChartMasters is a multi-artist platform using the CSPC methodology with dynamic streaming data. Timberlake Analytics focuses exclusively on Justin Timberlake with deeper breakdowns: live RIAA eligibility per song and album, certified units across 60+ certifying bodies, era-level combined album and singles totals, and nightly growth snapshots. The differentiator is depth and artist-specific detail.

What is the difference between certified units and pure sales?

Pure sales count only physical and digital purchases. Certified units (from RIAA, BPI, ARIA etc.) include streaming equivalents: since 2016 in the US, 150 streams count as one single sale and 1,500 streams count as one album sale for certification purposes. This is why Justin Timberlake's label reports ~117 million pure sales while his total certified units across all certifying bodies exceed 170 million.

How often is the streaming data updated?

Spotify stream counts are fetched live from Kworb on every page load and reflect Kworb's daily-updated data. Historical growth snapshots (7-day, 30-day, year-to-date) are captured nightly at 00:05 UTC via a GitHub Actions script and stored in Firestore.

What is the artist ratio used in the EAS formula?

The artist ratio (1.82) represents the proportion of a global artist's streams that are counted toward their own catalog versus total platform streams. It is used to adjust raw Spotify stream counts before applying the EAS conversion rate of 1,166 streams per album equivalent.

Methodology — CSPC

Career Sales Performance Chart (CSPC) is a methodology developed by Chartmasters to convert all music consumption formats into a single unified metric: Equivalent Album Sales (EAS).

The following conversion formulas are applied across all eras:

Certified Units vs. Pure Sales

These are two different metrics that are often confused. Justin Timberlake's record label reports approximately 117 million pure sales — meaning physical and digital purchases only, with no streaming counted.

However, modern certification bodies (RIAA since 2016, BPI since 2014, ARIA since 2016, and others) count streaming equivalents toward certifications: in the US, 150 streams = 1 single sale and 1,500 streams = 1 album sale. When all certifications are aggregated across RIAA, BPI, ARIA, Music Canada, and 60+ other certifying bodies, Justin Timberlake's total reaches over 170 million certified units.

Neither number is "wrong" — they measure different things. Pure sales reflect purchases. Certified units reflect the industry's current standard for measuring consumption, which includes streaming.

Why This Site Differs From ChartMasters

ChartMasters is the original publisher of the CSPC methodology and an authoritative source for career sales estimates. Timberlake Analytics builds on that foundation with a different focus: Justin Timberlake exclusively, with deeper per-era and per-certification breakdowns not available on a multi-artist platform.

RIAA Live Eligibility

The Certifications page shows both official RIAA certifications and a live eligibility estimate computed in real time from current streams and sales data. When the live estimate exceeds the official certification (which may not have been updated), the higher value is displayed.

RIAA album formula: (US streams ÷ 1500) + pure sales + (track sales ÷ 10). RIAA single formula: (US streams ÷ 150) + pure sales.
